Glossary of Shipping & Logistics Terms
Airway Bill (AWB)
A non-negotiable document issued by an airline that serves as a contract of carriage and a receipt of goods. It outlines the terms and conditions between the shipper and carrier.
Bill of Lading (BOL)
A legal document issued by a carrier to a shipper, detailing the type, quantity, and destination of the goods. It also acts as a shipment receipt upon delivery.
Consignee
The person or company named in a freight contract to whom goods have been consigned or turned over. The consignee is typically the recipient of the shipment.
Customs Declaration
A form that lists the details of goods that are being imported or exported. It is used to calculate any applicable duties or taxes.
Dimensional Weight (DIM Weight)
A calculation of the shipment’s weight based on its volume (length x width x height), rather than its actual weight. Used by carriers to determine shipping charges for bulky yet lightweight packages.
Freight Forwarder
A company that arranges the import and export of goods on behalf of shippers. They negotiate freight rates, handle documentation, and provide additional logistical support.
Incoterms
A set of international rules published by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) that define the responsibilities of buyers and sellers in global trade transactions.
Last Mile Delivery
The final step of the delivery process from a distribution center or facility to the end-user. Last mile delivery is often the most time-consuming and expensive part of the shipping journey.
Tracking Number
A unique identifier assigned to a shipment that allows shippers and recipients to follow its progress and status during transit.
